Tell-Tale Heart Edgar Allan Poe
Assignment: Comprehension Questions 1-4 are due today.
The students and I had an in-depth discussion about the story "The Tell-Tale Heart". We reviewed the answers to the comprehension questions and began to question if the killer in the story was insane or sane. I read to them from a court document what pleading for insanity means and the implications behind it. I also explained what happens to the person who is found not guilty by way of insanity. We discussed how the killer in the story did not want people to think he was insane.
Assignment:
Reread the story "The Tell-Tale Heart" and revisit your arguments for or against his sanity. Take into consideration the fact that this was based on a true newspaper article that Edgar Allan Poe read in the 1830s. Also take into consideration that the plea for insanity has been around since the 1700s and quite possibly could be applicable in the killer's trial. Rework your argument for or against his sanity and be prepared to debate on Monday.
