Working with Figuarative Language

Resources:
Timeless Voices, Timeless Themes Silver Level

"Incident in a Rose Garden" P. 878
"One Time" WIlliam Stafford P. 866

Assignment:
Today we went back over "Incident in a Rose Garden".
We reviewed in class what similes, metaphors, and personification were and how to use them.

Figurative Language Writing Activity
Today I taped a pencil and scissors to the board and had a giraffe made out of chicken wire and a ceramic frog sitting up near the board. The students gave me words that described these items and words that described what these items could do. I wrote them on the board next to that particular item. Then I told the students that they needed to describe these items through writing, but they couldn't use the words up on the board. They had to use figurative language to describe these objects. This took about a half an hour. We read examples and learned how to expand our writing and use figurative language.

We wrote down the definition to imagery and discussed what imagery was.
