"January" John Updike P. 836
"Two Haiku" P. 837
"Identity" Julio Noboa Polanco P. 838
Assignment: Today we discussed the poem "January", by John Updike, using the paraphrasing that the students worked on on Tuesday.
The Lyric Poem Assignment was Due Today.
We looked at the vocab word Haiku.
We read two haikus in class and then I asked the students to pick something in nature, write down descriptive words and comparisons for that one thing, and try to write a haiku about it. The students shared their finished product in class.
Free Write--I wrote an untitiled poem up on the board for the students to attempt to interpret during their free write for five minutes. We discussed the poem on the board, which led into the vocabulary word free verse.
The students wrote down the definition of free verse in their notes.
We listened to the poem "Identity", written by Juolio Noboa Polanco, on tape.
Assignment--Write a free verse poem in your journals about something that bothers you in your life.
Journal #4
Compare and contrast what the speaker of the poem "Identity" wants to be and what he does not want to be. You can use a venn diagram or a chart for this assignment.
Both of these assignments are due on Friday.
