Lesson/Assignment:
Lyrical Poetry--Turn on Your Radio

Resources:
Timeless Voices, Timeless Themes Silver Level
P. 834, 835, and 836
"January" John Updike P. 836

Assignment:
Today the students shared their three line poems that were due today in groups.

We began the lesson with the following literary terms:
Poetic Form
Lyrical Poetry
Speaker in a Poem
Paraphrase

The students then read about the author John Updike in their literature books.
In groups, the students paraphrased the poem "January" for discussion during next block period.

Assignment:
This will be handed in to me on a separate sheet of paper.

Take a sample of lyrics from a song you like--needs to be school appropriate.
Use these lyrics (the style and way that they were written) to create your own lyrical poem. Make sure you express your feelings and create a "mood", like a song does, with your writing. Your poem does not have to be the same topic as the song you picked, just a similar style.
