Understandings: Critical Reading
The students will be able to note details about each of the eight characters introduced in Chapter 1. They will be able to infer what some of the characters' feelings, motives, and viewpoints are, especially Ponyboy.
Reading Improvement Strategies
The students will listen to a tape of the first chapter of The Outsiders as they read along. This will allow them to pay close attention to details given about who the characters are and what they are like.
The students will also begin organizing the characters and their traits by keeping a character chart in their journals.
Resources: The Outsiders
The tape of The Outsiders read by Jim Fyfe
Assignment: Read Chapter 2 by Block Wed./Thurs.
